Figlio di un’importante famiglia della borghesia comasca, dai primi anni Cinquanta Luca Scacchi Gracco inizia un’inarrestabile carriera di viaggiatore e avventuriero che lo porta a conoscere l’arte europea, ma anche a scoprire le terre del Medioriente e dell’Africa. Fare la spola tra l’Italia e il mondo lo rende un fine conoscitore dell’arte popolare e gli consente di promuovere nel nostro paese alcuni tra i più importanti artisti europei. Parallelamente si impegna nell’attività di pittore, guardando inizialmente alle ricerche informali del secondo dopoguerra e divenendo, ben presto, un originale interprete dell’arte astratta. La mostra che il Mart di Rovereto dedica alla sua opera raccoglie documenti relativi alla sua attività di mercante d’arte, precoce mediatore per l’Italia delle opere di Francis Bacon, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, George Groz, Emil Nolde e Otto Dix, nonché di titolare dello Studio d’Arte Contemporanea a Milano. Accompagna i documenti una selezione di quadri. Le grandi tele di Scacchi Gracco sono testimoni di una ricerca articolata su un complesso intreccio di piani e di forme che astraggono alfabeti antichissimi – forse memoria delle esperienze mediorientali – e allo stesso tempo evocano modelli futuribili.

Luca Scacchi Gracco (1930-2014) built a varied career for himself in the art world of his time. The son of a leading middle-class family from Como, from the early 1950s he began an unstoppable career as a traveller and adventurer, which led him to get to know European art, but also to discover the most distant lands of the Middle East and Africa. Shuttling between Italy and the world made him a fine connoisseur of popular art and enabled him to promote some of the most important European artists in his own country. At the same time, he worked himself as a painter, initially in the wake of the informal post-World War II school and soon thereafter becoming an original interpreter of abstract art. The focus the Mart is dedicating to his work brings together documents relating to his activities as an art dealer, an early proponent in Italy of the works of Francis Bacon, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, George Grosz, Emil Nolde and Otto Dix. Other articles relate to his work as owner of the Studio d’Arte Contemporanea in Milan. A selection of his paintings accompanies the documents. Scacchi Gracco’s large canvases bear witness to a research based on a complex interweaving of planes and forms that render abstract ancient alphabets – perhaps reminiscent of his Middle Eastern experiences – and at the same time evoke futuristic models.
